People ask this constantly once they start planning a Kerala trip. Both towns sit on Vembanad Lake. Both run houseboat cruises. Both show up in every single guidebook. Somewhere along the way they got treated as interchangeable, which they’re really not.
What Alleppey Offers
Alappuzha, to use its proper name, is the older town. Coir manufacturing built it up originally, along with traditional boat construction, and somewhere along the way it turned into the center of Kerala’s whole houseboat industry. Finishing Point, where most cruises actually leave from, sits right in town.
Because so much of the industry runs out of here, you get options. Cheap day trips. Mid-range overnight boats. The full luxury vessels have a private crew. If choice matters more than anything else, this is where you’ll find it.
There’s also a real town attached to the jetty. Warehouses, a beach, a lighthouse, small shops selling the usual stuff plus some things worth actually looking at. It doesn’t feel built for tourists the way some places do.
Routes leaving Alleppey pass through what most people picture when they hear “Kerala backwaters. ” Paddy fields on either side. Old fishing nets. Villages right up against the water, kids walking home from school, that kind of thing.
What Kumarakom Offers
Sits on the other side of the lake, nearer Kottayam. Developed differently over the years, more of a resort than a town. The bird sanctuary is the main draw here, and honestly it’s worth visiting even if birds aren’t usually your thing.
Cruises from Kumarakom tend to slip into quieter, narrower canals since the jetty isn’t sitting in the middle of the busiest traffic. If what you want is quiet over variety, this wins.
Also has more high end resorts clustered along the water. Works well if the plan is cruise first, then a few nights somewhere nice on land.
Distance, Cost, and Other Practical Stuff
Kochi to Alleppey is the shorter drive. Kumarakom takes longer, usually through Kottayam, worth factoring in if your schedule’s tight.
Boat prices themselves don’t really differ much between the two. Total trip cost sometimes runs higher around Kumarakom, but that’s mostly the resort stays people add on, not the cruise itself.
Same lake, technically, connecting both towns. A long enough cruise from either side ends up covering some of the same water eventually. What actually differs is where you start and what kind of route your operator tends to run out of that particular jetty.
Making the Call
First time in Kerala, Alleppey’s the more practical call given how much more there is to choose from. Already been before, or you just want something slower and less crowded this time around, Kumarakom’s worth the extra hour or so on the road.
We run mostly out of Alleppey’s Finishing Point at Spice Routes, so guests get access to routes across the whole lake no matter which town they’re sleeping in. Plenty of our guests stay in Kumarakom and still end up cruising the same connected waterways anyway. Comes down to where you’d rather sleep than where you’d rather float, most of the time.
